LAKELAND -- We all know someone who treats people like dogs. But meet the reverse -someone who treats dogs like people.

Dr. Bill Latter, the veterinarian who owns All Creatures Animal Clinic on West Pipkin Road in South Lakeland, has a gentle, kind spirit that suits him well in his work. He says many of the cures that work for people work for animals, too.

He's one of the few vets in Florida -- the only one in Lakeland -- who uses chiropractic treatment on pets. Latter's customers, the human ones, swear by it. He spent three years making 15 week-long trips from Florida to a school in western Illinois to learn to perform chiropractic treatment on animals.

Have you ever been to the chiropractor or had back pain? Ever spent the weekend limping around the house? Well if you have you know how painful back pain can be. It may surprise you to know that your pet can experience that same pain.

In our continuing effort to bring you the latest in animal wellness we are pleased to announce that All Creatures Animal Clinic is one of the few hospitals in the state with a certified Animal Chiropractics doctor on site. Dr. Latter can perform many different kinds of adjustments for your pet. Please take some time to read over a few frequently asked questions.

What is animal chiropractic?

• A chiropractic adjustment is defined as short lever, high velocity controlled thrust by hand or instrument that is directed at specific articulations to correct vertebral subluxations.

• It comprises the adjustment of vertebral joints, extremity joints, and cranial sutures.

• It includes evaluating the patient’s history, intended use/athleticism, health state and prior x-rays and tests.

• A chiropractic exam includes a neurological exam, stance and gait analysis and motion and static palpation.

How chiropractic works?

• The bones of the spine and joints are maintained in a specific alignment.

• The nerves which surround each joint and vertebral articulation are in constant communication with the central nervous system, brain and all organs.

• When even a subtle change in the alignment occurs, it is called a subluxation.

• Subluxations affect the nervous system, local muscles, joints and even distant organs, glands and body functions.

Why treatment can help with other disorders?

• All organs receive nervous system input from nerves which exit between vertebra.

• Correcting subluxations of these areas can change the nervous system input and affect blood flow, as well as hormone and neurotransmitter levels directly affecting the organs and glands, skin and joints.

Will an adjustment hurt?

• Most animals accept both the exam and adjustment without signs of pain.

• When a painful area is found, the practitioner will use the gentlest techniques to reduce pain before delivering an adjustment.

• In cases of acute or extreme pain, the doctor will often delay the complete adjustment until your companion can be relaxed.

Why doesn't one adjustment resolve the problem?

• In the case of a recent injury or subluxation, one adjustment may be adequate, but a follow-up is needed to assure your companion is well.

• Often no outward signs occur to let owners know when a subluxation occurs.

• When long term problems reach the point of noticeable pain or outward signs, the doctor may need to do several adjustments.

How can anyone adjust a horse or a dog?

• With animal chiropractic care the practitioner is not adjusting a horse, but rather the relative position of two bones at a joint articulation.

What can I expect after an adjustment?

• Many animals will show immediate improvement.

• Sometimes there is a 24-48 hour period of tiredness.

• Some animals require a few sessions to resolve acute pain.

• Often, with chronic health problems, the doctor will want to see your animal several times to maintain and re-establish normal function of the joints and nervous system.
